Call for Volunteers!
The Houston Area Visually Impaired Network (HAVIN is seeking volunteers to help us host our annual event for the Houston blindness community.
Event: 2024 HAVIN Insight Expo, sponsored by the University of Houston College of Optometry
Date: Saturday, March 23, 2024
Time: 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
(Some volunteers will be needed as early as 7:30 to assist in setup/registration)
Location: University of Houston’s College of Optometry, Health 1 Building – University of Houston central campus, 4401 Martin Luther King Blvd., Houston, TX 77204
Theme: “Knowledge, Empowerment, and You…You are the KEY.”
One of the primary ways HAVIN serves our mission of “Bringing unity to our community” is through our signature event the HAVIN Insight Expo, an annual event which we have held since 2011. This day-long event, sponsored by the University of Houston College of Optometry and featuring speakers, workshops, panel presentations, and exhibitors will be held at the University of Houston’s College of Optometry, located at 4401 Martin Luther King Blvd., Houston, TX 77204.
We will have speakers and presentations in the morning, as well as an exhibit hall. We will be serving a light breakfast and box lunches. We usually have between 120 and 150 attendees at our event.
We will need some volunteers there early to assist with registration and with exhibitors, as well as throughout the event.
Volunteers will provide sighted assistance to blind attendees as they move about the two stories and various rooms of the building. Some of the jobs include assisting with onsite registration, giving verbal guidance, providing sighted guide (leading a blind person with them holding onto one’s elbow), assisting some of our visually impaired exhibitors, and helping with hospitality in serving food or cleaning up.
